I figured out the other night as I sat up with Sarah after everyone had gone to bed where the phrase "Rootin' Tootin" must have come from. It was probably somewhere around midnight and I realized I was mostly sitting up with her because she had gas. All of my babies have always thought the solution to life's problems was to nurse and Sarah is no exception. So she was alternating nursing, getting a burp, falling asleep, waking up either from the discomfort of the burp or with a gas pain, and then wanting to nurse some more to relax and ease her discomfort. She wasn't hungry anymore, but she couldn't stay asleep long enough for me to got to bed either because every time she fell asleep, she woke up a few minutes later with a burp or gas pain. And of course, she didn't want to be burped, she wanted to nurse because that's the answer to all life's problems in baby world! We had been at this routine for a few hours, as usual, between the hours of 9-midnight. I said to her all she ever did was root and toot! (Rooting is what it's called when a baby opens it's mouth and turns it's head looking for mama and the food.) And the light went on and I think I may have figured out when the phrase was first coined and used! :)
